I have really enjoyed Daryl Gregory’s work in the past and tordotcom novellas are great so I was excited to get a copy of this. I did not know the premise before reading this, but having been a fan of a boy band back in me young (stupider) days, I found this to be a hoot.
This story follows the aftermath of an end-of-tour party of WyldBoyZ whose teenage band members are animal-human hybrids. Their manager is murdered and Detectives Luce has to solve the case. But the fan base is rabid, the party was out of control, and the suspect list super long. It doesn’t help when the fans, I mean suspects, are dressed in full animal costumes!
Aye, the premise be silly but don’t let that fool ye. This is so wonderfully put together. There are puns, lovely chapter titles, and the quirkiness that I love about the author’s writing. There is also subtle jabs at the ideas of personhood, fame, and greed. The murder mystery’s resolution was entertaining but the boy band shined. I highly recommend this one. I will continue to read Gregory’s backlist and whatever he puts out next. Arrrr!

I loved this too! So much fun. I’ve only read one other book of his (We Are All Completely Fine), but I definitely want to read more.

This sounds amusing! Though I haven’t read the H.G. Wells novel it takes inspiration from. I wonder how that would impact my enjoyment of this novella?

I didn’t read that novel or watch the movie. It didn’t impact me enjoyment at all. Later I discussed the novella with the First Mate. He said he didn’t think I was missing anything either. I do think ye would be entertained by this.

This was my fifth Daryl Gregory book and I had so much fun! Spoonbenders and We Are All Completely Fine are the books of his that really stick with me, though.

Ooh yes this sounds very fun! My favorite Daryl Gregory books are still Afterparty and We Are All Completely Fine, and his last couple haven’t quite hit for me? But this sounds really really fun so hopefully it will be a return to form. 😀

Afterparty was the first book of his I read. I haven’t read we are all completely fine yet. It is true that not all of them are a hit for me either but I always find things to like so I will eventually read them all. I hope ye love this one (and review it so I can see what ye think). Arrr!
