Shiver Me Timbers! A Series Shake-Down – Part Two

Shiver Me Timbers mateys!  Me Series be spiraling out of control!  Many of me crew lament and wail about how series never seem to be finished and are hard to keep track of.  That got me to thinking about what series still be languishing in the hold hoping for love and completion.  Now here be the thing, when I started the official tally, I realized that subcategories would be needed due to the sheer volume or me noggin would self-destruct.  So I will be splitting this up into multiple posts.  The six (!) categories thus far are:

  • Series that be completed that I have not finished (Much to me shame!);
  • Series that I be caught up on but am waiting on the author to supply me with the next volume (Write faster dang it!);
  • Series that are not finished but I haven’t caught up with all the released books yet (Why?);
  • Series that be completed that I haven’t even started yet (Oh my!);
  • Series that are not finished that I haven’t started yet (Sigh!); and
  • Series that I am gonna toss overboard for a myriad of reasons (Dun Dun Dun!).

This second installment will focus on series that I be caught up on but am waiting on the author to supply me with the next volume (Write faster dang it!).  They be listed by category with the series titles listed in alphabetical order by author’s first name.  Clicking on the series titles will lead ye to the series’ Goodreads page.  Clicking on the links in the descriptions will take ye to the reviews of the books I have read so far.  This will seriously be a long list so continue at yer own peril . . .

  1. Semiosis (Sue Burke) – When I read semiosis I thought it was a standalone.  It ends nicely.  But apparently a sequel is now coming out on 10/22/19 called interference.  I am up for more in this world.
  2. The Vela (Becky Chambers, Rivers Solomon, S.L. Huang, Yoon Ha Lee) – Okay now season one on Serial Box just happened but I hope there be a season two cause I be hooked!
  3. Molly Southbourne (Tade Thompson) – If ye haven’t read the murders of molly southbourne yet then ye should.  The survival of molly southbourne is coming out on 7/9/19.  I still want the first one to be a movie.  And that be rare for me.

  1. Lightbringer (Brent Weeks) – I have loved books one through four in this series even if only #4 has a review posted.  The last book in the series, the burning white, is expected on 10/22/19.
  2. Chronicles of Lunos (E.S. Bell) – I read book one back in 2017.  It has ships, magic, islands, assassins, dragon-kind, merfolk, gods, and so much more.  There is no word on when the next book comes out yet.
  3. Lotus Kingdoms (Elizabeth Bear) – The first book of this trilogy was great.  Book two comes out on 5/28/19.  Not too long.  Arrr!
  4. Industrial Magic (Emma Newman) – I loved books one and two of this series.  Given how book two ended it does seem likely that there will be more should the author choose to write them.  Nothing concrete to date.
  5. Song of Ice and Fire (George R.R. Martin) – No there is no date on the winds of winter.  No I am not mad at the author about it.  No I will not allow annoying comments about this on me ship.  Yes I am being patient.  Listen to this song in the meantime.  And remember as Gaiman says,  “George R.R. Martin is not your bitch.”
  6. Mystic (Jason Denzel) – I loved book one and thought book two was decent.  The third (and last?) book is called mystic skies though no date on this one.
  7. Shades of Grey (Jasper Fforde) – The first book in this series came out in 2009.  It was a five star read.  No review here on the log but I hope the author writes more of this series.
  8. A Chorus of Dragons (Jenn Lyons) – I loved the first book of the series which came out 2/5/19.  I am already looking forward to the name of all things currently scheduled for 10/29/19.  Arrr!
  9. Black Wolves (Kate Elliott) – I read book one of the trilogy back in 2016.  Book two, dead empire, is currently scheduled for 12/15/20.
  10. The Goblin Emperor (Katherine Addison) – The first book was published in 2014 in the days before this log.  It was a five star read that I always felt deserved more attention.  It was a standalone but apparently announced a companion book at Worldcon 2018 called the witness for the dead.  Sign me up!
  11. Ree Varekai (Marie Brennan) – So far there be two novellas in the series, cold-forged flame and lightning in the blood.  There seem to be more stories to tell in this world but I haven’t heard news about other books yet.
  12. The Kingkiller Chronicle (Patrick Rothfuss) – I adored the name of the wind and really didn’t like the wise man’s fear.  I am mostly meh about doors of stone.  But I will likely read it at some point.
  13. War of the Archons (R.S. Ford) – I did really enjoy a demon in silver.  Hangman’s gate is currently scheduled for 6/18/19.
  14. Founders (Robert Jackson Bennett) – I loved foundryside and be looking forward to shorefall which is expected in 2020.
  15. Kingdom of Grit (Tyler Whitesides) – I recently read this one about magical dragon poop and a heist.  It was fun.  Book two, the shattered realm of ardor benn, is coming out on 11/3/20.

Young Adult – Sci-Fi:

  1. Skyward (Brandon Sanderson) – I read the first book in November 2018.  The second book, currently titled starsight, is currently scheduled for 12/3/19.  Untitled #3 is scheduled for publication in 2021 and Untitled #4 is 2022 according to the author’s website.  Not too much of a wait.  The man is a writing fiend so there seems to always be something new of his to read.  I can always read Stormlight #3 in the meantime.
  2. The Nyxia Triad (Scott Reintgen) – I adored book one and thought book two was decent.  The last book, nyxia uprising, is scheduled for 4/16/19.

Young Adult – Fantasy:

  1. Rithmatist (Brandon Sanderson) – The first novel doesn’t have a review on its own as I read it prior to the blog.  But I do talk a bit about it here.  Due to the author’s massive list of projects, there is no date yet for the next book.  I am patiently waiting.
  2. Nevermoor (Jessica Townsend) – If ye haven’t started this series yet, ye need to.  It be awesome.  So far only books one and two have been written.  Book three is in process.  I can’t wait!
  3. Shadow of a Fox (Julie Kagawa) – I really enjoyed shadow of a fox.  Book two of the trilogy, soul of a sword, is currently scheduled for 6/18/19.
  4. The Enchanted Kitchen (Dianna Sanchez) – This cute quartet deserves more love.  Books one and two are out.  The author currently has two more of the series planned.  No dates yet though.
  5. Small Spaces (Katherine Arden) – I loved small spaces about scary scarecrows.  Apparently book two, dead voices, is scheduled for 8/27/19.
  6. The Daoshi Chronicles (M.H. Boroson) – This be another series that deserves way more hype.  Not only was the girl with no eyes awesome but there also be a top secret story that ye can hunt down.  The next book the girl with no face is scheduled for 10/1/19.  Arrr!
  7. Tower of the Winds (Makiia Lucier) – I recently read isle of blood and stone and loved it.  The second book, song of the abyss, is scheduled for 8/27/19.  I was denied for a NetGalley eArc but I still plan on nabbing this at some point.
  8. Arc of a Scythe (Neal Shusterman) – I adored both scythe and thunderhead.  Book three of this trilogy, the toll, is set to come out on 9/3/19.
  9. Wayward Children (Seanan McGuire) – I have already read one, two, three, and four.  Book five, come tumbling down, is expected sometime in 2020.  Wish I could have it now!
  10. Brooklyn Brujas (Zoraida Córdova) – This series rocks.  I read one and two.  Book three is untitled and has no release date yet.  But I want it.

So thus far in Part Two we have THIRTY (30) series with a total of THIRTY-SIX (36) books that I be needing the author to finish.  Not too bad.  Add in the completed series to finish and me total is now 68 series and 149 books.  But I am not done yet . . .

Keep a weathered-eye out for more lamentations about unfinished series and always remember:

Q: Why don’t ye ever see pirates cry?

A: Because if they do, it be a private tear!

Hardy har har!

  1. I LOVED The Name of the Wind, but haven’t picked up Wise Man’s Fear yet… I’ve been putting it off since it’s SOOOOO LONG! I’m sad to see you didn’t enjoy it 😦

    I am also eagerly awaiting the next Nevermoor! And I had no idea there was going to be a second book to Small Spaces!

    1. I think ye will be in the majority about wise man’s fear. There aren’t many of us that disliked it.

      I adore the Nevermoor series and think that the next book might be in me top five of wishing for it. Hmmm I don’t know what else would make the top five. The next game of thrones book for sure.

      I found out about the sequel to small spaces when organizing for this post I think the first one was an excellent standalone but I am happy to have more.

      Thanks for the lovely comment.

  2. I love this. I also love how fantasy writers are the worse in writing sequels faster. GRRM, Rothfuss and Scott Lynch are my top 3 of the worse of the worse although they are awesome! 😛 They just need to deliver the goods…. faster!

    P.S. I recently finished reading Elizabeth Bear’s Ancestral Night and enjoyed it! You should totally look into it!!! It has things you would enjoy a lot! 😮

    1. Aye, fantasy writers do take forever but I am assuming it’s because the world building is so complex.

      And I did see yer review for the new Elizabeth Bear book. I want it but am going to make meself finish the Eternal Sky trilogy first. I have about half a book to go. Thanks for thinking of me and for visiting!

    1. True it does feel good to be caught up on something. I have 11 other series I am not caught up on. Those will be posted next Wednesday. Then comes the mess of series I haven’t started yet. Ugh. Need more time!

      I am so glad Sue Burke be writing another! I have no clue where it will go next but I am looking forward to finding out. Thanks for the lovely comment.
