Ahoy there me mateys! This be me read for the October BookBum Club Challenge where the theme be “Horrorween – read a horror book for Halloween!” This has been on me list to read for forever. I picked this one because it won the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel (2007), Locus Award for Best First Novel (2008), ITW Thriller Award for Best First Novel (2008). This book has a 3.83 rating on Goodreads from 85,635 Ratings and 7,334 Reviews. I must be missing something.
This book bored me. Aye, it had a fabulous premise. I kinda liked the snarky and grump-tastic protagonist, Jude Coyne at times. The beginning had a great set-up. I really enjoyed the book up until the ghost showed up. But the ghost was the least scary ghost I think I have ever read about. All it did was talk. Seriously boring.
This was one of those meandering books where not much happened. And what did happen wasn’t worth readin’ about. I feel like people who thought it was scary were readin’ a different version. I was interested in reading NOS4A2 but the First Mate read that one and said that that wasn’t good either. I shall pass. Very disappointed and will likely not be readin’ more by this author.
Much thanks to the BookBum Club for giving me the incentive to finally read this “Horrorween” novel.
Goodreads has this to say about the novel:
Aging, self-absorbed rock star Judas Coyne has a thing for the macabre — his collection includes sketches from infamous serial killer John Wayne Gacy, a trepanned skull from the 16th century, a used hangman’s noose, Aleister Crowley’s childhood chessboard, etc. — so when his assistant tells him about a ghost for sale on an online auction site, he immediately puts in a bid and purchases it.
The black, heart-shaped box that Coyne receives in the mail not only contains the suit of a dead man but also his vengeance-obsessed spirit. The ghost . . . begins his assault on the rocker’s sanity.

I’ve heard that you either love or hate Joe Hill– there is rarely an in between. I haven’t read any of his books, but I am constantly listening to the two sides duke out their perspectives at my Science Fiction/Fantasy book club! I am with you on needing the book to go somewhere– creeping dread is useless if it doesn’t go anywhere! XD
Also, I just saw that the BookBum Book Club is on hiatus! 😦 How do you feel about this?

I be devastated that the Club be on hiatus. I love the entire concept and have been enjoying it. That said, I totally understand why the break is happening and have absolutely no ill will about it. If it comes back I will happily participate again.
There does seem to be a dichotomy about Joe Hill’s writing. I am on the dislike side. It be hard to hate someone’s work on one book. He might have good books. I am open to that possibility. I just have too many books and not enough time. Plus horror is not a genre I read much of these days so I don’t feel like I am missing out on anything. Ye every planning on making the plunge into his work? Or are ye avoiding it because of the potential violence?

Yes! Too many books and not enough time. I am only willing to give an author two shots before I give up on them, and often they only get one. There are too many other books I need to be reading!
If I do pick up Joe Hill’s work, it will probably be Locke & Key. I don’t particularly enjoy horror (or violence!), but after reading Neil Gaiman’s graphic novel series The Sandman, I am willing to give more horror graphic novels a shot. Besides, he won an Eisner Award for this series. That’s a good sign for me.

Hmm I have heard good things about Locke & Key but I don’t get along with graphic novels so well. I keep trying to get into the medium and not succeeding. I am not visual so I miss things in that style. Me best friend who works in film always laughs when I watch movies with her because I miss the visual clues movie the story along. She has to pause the movie and explain. I love her for it. Arrr!

That’s really cool! I mean, I’m sorry that you don’t connect as well to the visual styles, but I love that you are aware of it. I’ve not heard of people having this disconnect, but I’m not surprised! I wonder how many people just aren’t aware. Fascinating!

This is my easily my least favorite of Joe Hill’s works (including both novels and graphic novels). That said he is one of my favorite horror writers, I love his books.

heh … all the others? I love NOS4A2 for different reasons than I love The Fireman. I may have enjoyed both of them just a tiny bit more than Horns.
