The Captain’s Log – spellslinger (Sebastien de Castell)

Ahoy there me mateys!  The crew has been readin’ and reviewin’ this series like crazy.  I have been meaning to check out both it and the author’s work for a while.  So when I couldn’t think of what to read, I thought I would take a page out of Kate @ booksaremyfavouriteandbest’s tips and use Kindle samples to find me next book.  I picked a sample of this as me first choice and liked it so much that I immediately bought it and read it.

This story follows Kellen, a young man whose magic hasn’t manifested yet.  But his 16 birthday is fast approaching and he must find a way to spark his magic or join the servant caste.  So when Kellen tries to win his first of four duels with a con, he sets in motion a mess that changes the very understanding of his society and his place in it.

I loved the magic system.  I adored the traveler, Ferius Parfax (isn’t that a great name?).  I loved the snarky “demons.”  I liked many of the crazy plot twists.  While I don’t think this book has a ton of reread potential, this was an outright fun read.  And I will be picking up more of the series.  Arrr!

Side note:  Matey Kate may have created a monster by introducing me to Kindle samples!

Goodreads has this to say about the novel:

There are three things that earn you a man’s name among the Jan’Tep. The first is to demonstrate the strength to defend your family. The second is to prove you can perform the high magic that defines our people. The third is simply to reach the age of sixteen. I was a few weeks shy of my birthday when I learned that I wouldn’t be doing any of those things.

Magic is a con game.

Kellen is moments away from facing his first mage’s duel and the start of four trials that will make him a spellcaster. There’s just one problem: his magic is gone. As his sixteenth birthday approaches, Kellen falls back on his cunning in a bid to avoid total disgrace. But when a daring stranger arrives in town, she challenges Kellen to take a different path. Ferius Parfax is one of the mysterious Argosi – a traveller who lives by her wits and the three decks of cards she carries. She’s difficult and unpredictable, but she may be Kellen’s only hope…

  1. I avoid Kindle samples like the plague. Otherwise, it’s suddenly 4am and I’ve purchased $300 in books without even noticing. O_o Amazon is such a pusher.

I haven’t heard of this book, but I’m intrigued! What is the series this book is a part of, and how many more books are there? It seems like we must have a small intersection of crew if this is the first time I’ve heard of this book! XD

    1. Hardy har har!! I have read one sample and bought the book so Kindle samples so far have grabbed me 100% of the time. And aye, Amazon is certainly a pusher 🙂

This book be from the Spellslinger series. I think there be four books so far. I know that it was popular in the UK and took forever to get to the states. Me British crew kept talking about them. Also none of the libraries have them so I had to buy it. Fluffy fun. It was worth turning over some of me loot.

      1. I am constantly amazing at how books are promoted differently in different countries which speak the same language. I mean, it makes total sense. But why are there best selling books in the UK I’ve never heard of?! I feel like I should know all!

Ahhh- I did some series research (I can’t help it, sometimes I’m lazy…) and it looks like a 4th book was just published this month and the 5th book is slated for May 2019. I also learned during this research that I have coverlust for the UK covers. Looks like I’ll be importing me some books! XD

      2. I also always think fantasy and sci-fi books from the UK should be released in the US at the same time. I mean I prefer the UK spelling of words like grey and favourite. Changing words like that are silly. Glad to know spellslinger is going to be at least five books. I have time to get to the rest. Are the UK covers the ones that look like cards? If so, I prefer the other ones. And I am all about importing books. I know there are companies that do but I have been avoiding them because I am afraid I would spend all me loot!

      3. Yes, the UK ones are the ones which look like cards. I love the simple color scheme and the focus on characters. I think as a collection, the US covers are prettier together, but I like the individual aesthetics of each UK book. I guess we can’t have our cake and eat it too, hmm? 😉

      4. I also got one recently where they blocked out the “good” stuff to make ye buy it. It is non-fiction. I told them I couldn’t do a real review with half the book missing! At least with an abandoned book I can explain why I didn’t finish it and why it didn’t work for me.

    1. I be in the US and this finally crossed the big pond. I have been waiting for it. I would have sailed to London to snag a copy but was distracted by other books. It is a fun start to a series. Thanks for the comment matey!

  2. I’ve heard so many good things about these books. They (like so many others) have been on my list for a while now. So many books, too little time. *sigh*

Hope you’ve been doing well! 🙂

    1. I be surviving matey! Trying to thrive. So little time to read. I am not sure I would ever have enough. But I did enjoy the first book and will likely read them all. But I have a whole slew to get through first. Arrr!

    1. Well matey, it always be useful to have a look-see before I spend me hard earned loot on it. Because of space limitations in the hold, I only tend to buy books that I will reread these days. So a sample is a good way to see if it works for me. Though I use the local libraries a whole lot these days. I love yer sample saturdays and the whys for how ye find these books and why ye throw them overboard. Arrr!
