Ahoy there me mateys! I received this fantasy eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. So here be me honest musings . . .
war cry (Brian McClellan)

Okay so me crew raves about this author. I haven’t read any of his work. So when I saw this book which “introduces a new universe, new armies, and new monsters,” I thought I would check out his writing before I made the leap into his long and established Powder Mage series. And I loved it.
The story follows Teado who is part of a military campaign that has been going on for generations. Each side is always claiming victory is around the corner. But Teado isn’t buying it. His platoon is isolated, starving, and hanging on by a thread. So when command fails to restock provisions again, Teado’s unit takes a desperate gamble for survival.
I was completely engrossed in Teado’s struggle and watching the events unfold. What is interesting about this war story is that it has an older feel to it. The war machinery feels like something out of WWI. There are prop planes and motorbikes and such. But the addition is magic. For example, Teado is a shape-shifter and can become a super-human fighting machine. Others make illusions. It be awesome.
The only problem with this is that it be a novella. I didn’t realize that and was startled when I ran out of book. I want more! The story that has been set up is fascinating and I hope we get more tales set in this universe. In the meantime, I have some Powder Mage books to catch up on!
Goodreads has this to say about the novella:
On the high plains, war is life.
Teado has been a part of the war effort for as long as he can remember. His childhood was spent in the aircraft and ammunition factories until his power manifested. Now he is on the front lines, fighting the great war as one of the monstrous shapeshifting wizards that are all but extinct after decades of battle.
Behind enemy lines, Teado’s special operations platoon plays a deadly game of cat and mouse, sabotaging and demoralizing the enemy. But food is scarce. The enemy has pushed their main forces back further and their requests for resupply have gone unanswered. They will make one last dangerous bid for survival and, maybe, change the course of the war forever.

Ooh the WWI tech sounds super cool! And I seem to have the same problem with most (if not all) novellas–they end just when I’m getting interested! I couldn’t get into Promise of Blood, but apparently Sins of the Empire (the second trilogy) can be read as a standalone and is all kinds of amazing, so I might give that one a shot. 😀

I didn’t realize that there were multiple trilogies in the series. I thought it was one long story arc. So thanks for clarifying that. But even though this novella is but a taste, it sure did whet me appetite. Thanks for the comment matey!

Sounds interesting! I’ll consider this one as an introduction to a new author – I’ve been curious about the Powder Mage series too, but I don’t always have good luck with military fiction.

I don’t normally love military fiction either (unless it involves space). But this was a pleasant and fun surprise. Thanks for visiting.

This sounds brilliant! I’ll be approaching this one as a fan of his Powder Mage universe, and I’m looking forward to trying something different from him 🙂

I’m so glad you found a new world to love! But, a novella. Darn! I get so frustrated when I pick up a mid-series book or a novella on NetGalley. I almost always want more. XD It sounds like this is an introduction to a new series for McClellan. Will you be looking out for more books in this series, or from McClellan in general?

Both! I will try and read his Powder Mage series. I have been hesitant to start because it be so long. But what I really want is the rest of the book that should stem from the novella! But I have plenty to read in the meantime and lots of other series to finish. Thanks for the comment.

Oooh, I just looked up Powder Mage and it sounds *awesome*! I love alternate fantasy settings, like this flintlock-fantasy or silkpunk. None of my friends have read any of Powder Mage (thanks, Goodreads!) so I’ll be looking out for your eventual revew. 😉

It seems to have a lot of negative reviews from others for reasons of price and expectations. Glad to hear that ye liked this one!

Ok. You got me intrigued about those reviews, I looked some up…
Price: It’s $4. A cup of coffee! And a reg-sized book is about 300-500… $12. WC is 100 pages. Math adds up correctly.
Novella: I had so many questions when I was finished with this one… but I didn’t think that wasn’t a bad thing at all.

Hardy har har! I loved the price breakdown. Not all novella’s would be worth me $4 (and I don’t drink coffee) but it entertains me that the math works out. And the questions left at the end of this weren’t bad at all. I just need more! Thanks for readin’. Arrr!
