Ahoy there me mateys! So the last experiment of me listenin’ to an audiobook while doin’ mundane tasks worked. But could the results be repeated? I decided to test the experience a second time. The twist this time? To listen to a book I had never read before ::GASP!!::. But what to pick . . .
Well scrolling through me list of choices, I realized that ’twas no choice at all. Neil Gaiman’s shiny title stood out. I have a wee bit of an obsession (for details click here) and so I gleefully began the tale. When suddenly . . .
I realized that Mr. Neil Gaiman hisself was narratin’. The intensity of the experience escalated. I had no inkling until that exact moment that he was goin’ to read me his own story. Blimey!
The story. The narration. The experience. Absolutely perfect. Hearin’ about a dad’s trip to the store to get milk has never been so fun. In fact one of me crew actually dared to ask what me satisfied smirking grin be about. I just continued to grin like a cheshire cat. Heave Ho and get yerself a copy!
Side note: I will certainly give a gander to this story again. I am slightly curious about both the English and American illustrations. But I likely will just listen to it again. So perfect.
Goodreads has this to say about the novel:
“I bought the milk,” said my father. “I walked out of the corner shop, and heard a noise like this: t h u m m t h u m m. I looked up and saw a huge silver disc hovering in the air above Marshall Road.”
“Hullo,” I said to myself. “That’s not something you see every day. And then something odd happened.”

I loved listening to him narrate The Graveyard Book. That was my favorite of his so far because of the complete experience.

I will have to add that one to me list! I wasn’t planning on re-reading that anytime soon but if he narrates it then I will listen to it sometime in the near future!

He does narrate it! I think that might be the first audio book I heard him narrate. So fun.

Great that your audiobook + mundane task experiments have worked out so far! I’m a huge audiobook fan but I think it’s important to find good, well-narrated ones and also to do tasks or go for walks while listening. I find just doing nothing either makes me impatient or puts me to sleep. Oh, and btw I’ve also been caught grinning while listening to particularly good or amusing books 🙂 Anyway, it sounds like you picked a pretty perfect audiobook!

Since that glorious audio book I have listened to several others. I have to be doing something else or it is too slow and makes me grumpy. I can read so much faster! Also the narrator does matter. If ye haven’t listened to this one, give it a shot!

I really need to pick up some of Gaiman’s self narrated books. I am already a huge fan! Had never heard of this ?!

It is technically an illustrated book for children. Or a Captain pirate and her crew!

Well I made it about 4/5s through it. I had it lent to me by a friend at a wedding who said I just had to read it. I can never decide if I want to finish it or not. Though the thought does occur to me every single time someone brings it up.

I absolutely love Neil Gaiman – and, unbelievably I went to hear him perform a reading of this very book. He is such a genuinely lovely guy it’s no wonder that he has such a strong fan base. And I think he reads quite a few (maybe even all but I don’t know) of his books. I did listen to American Gods – it was fantastic, a special edition and whilst NG didn’t narrate it it had a varied cast and he added extra material that he did narrate himself. I loved it.

Ah you got to hear it read in person!!! I don’t normally care about things like that but for this one I make an exception. He does seem to be a really caring loving person. The American Gods audiobook had to be crazy long! Tempting to reread that book in audio form. I will have to think about it. What do you think about the tv series?

Oh, Neil. He could narrate the phone book and it would still be amazing. ❤

I’m re-reading Good Omens at the moment. I want to review it on the blog before the tv version comes out.

I didn’t ever get through that book. It rather bored me. I think it is the Pratchett parts as I have only sort of enjoyed the one other book I tried by him. I know I am in the minority about book Good Omens and one-half of it’s authors. I be looking forward to yer review.

It took me a little while to get into it the first time around. The beginning is a little weird.
